Anyone who’s witnessed John Meagher’s high octane sets will know he has an unforgettable talent. He turns his rage and dissatisfaction with life into pure comedy gold. Somehow he spins the British class system and trouble in the Middle East into personal affronts to him, and gets massive laughs. Despite all the anger and high blood pressure, John’s immense charm always means he’s a big hit with audiences.
He’s been nominated all over the shop, whether for the NATYs, Leicester Sq New Comedian of the Year, BBC New Comedy award, or for Irish Comedian of the Year, and as I write this he’s up for the Leicester Mercury comedian of the year award. He’s also getting appearances on the BBC and TV3 in Ireland. It’s only a matter of time before he’s known to a much bigger degree.
What a lot of people don’t know about John is how great a guy he is. He’s supported our club massively with his knowledge of the brewing & hospitality industries – if you have a club run by comics it’s really lucky when some comics have prodigious talents outside of just making people laugh. John has been 100% behind us and with us every step of the way, and it’s a real honour to count him as a friend.
Also, talking about obscure talents, John was also a high-level wrestler back in the day, and if I remember the anecdote correctly, once represented Northern Ireland at the Olympics. That can’t be right, can it? That depth of knowledge explains his Boxing and MMA podcast, The Open Guard.
